SIR — Between march 13 and 17, I was in Soroti carrying out research. I visited IDP camps and the situation i encountered opened my eyes to the predicament people in Teso and northern Uganda have been subjected to. In Baptist B camp, Western Quarters, i met a young man called John Ongwara (18) who is disabled and is also the head of his household. His parents were killed by the LRA in 2003. He looks after his three young siblings. Despite his condition, his spirit and enthusiasm was a source of inspiration as he was passionate about his education and was determined to make something of himself. This experience brought to light the fact that some of us Ugandans are guilty of blocking our minds to the
suffering of our brothers and sisters in the north. Apathy is common among many Ugandans. My prayer is that our minds and hearts be opened to their predicament. Those of us who can visit these areas or make any contributions should do so and offer a ray of hope to fellow Ugandans who feel abandoned by their own.
