First Lady Janet Museveni has called upon Ugandans to pray for the spirit of unity and peace within the nation.

“Each one of us may pray for serenity for ourselves and those around us,” Mrs. Museveni said yesterday in her Martyrs’ Day message.

The day marks the death of 26 martyrs burned at Namugongo on June 3 1886 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga. A total of 45 martyrs were killed that year. The martyrs chose to die rather than renounce their faith.

Pope Paul VI canonised 22 of the Catholic martyrs as saints in 1964.

Mrs. Museveni added, “Let us stand for democracy, for love, for our fellow countrymen and women. Let us stand for good morals.”

Advocating for good morals, the Ruhaama county MP said, “Let us desist from compromising situations that may expose us to HIV/AIDS infection. This condition is not just a medical concern, but a concern of character and morality.”

Mrs. Museveni said Ugandans of different religions (martyrs) surrendered themselves to killings so as to defend their religions.

“It is important to stand for something or you will fall for anything. Let us stand for what we believe to be true and right,” she said.
