THE national university team yesterday left for South Africa, a day after the African University games started in the South African city of Tswane, formerly Pretoria.
An apologetic sports state minister Charles Bakkabulindi flagged off the team at Makerere University Games Union office, with a call for patience and discipline if they are to succeed.

“I apologise for all the inconvenience caused in trying to get you funds. You have left late but use this as a blessing to even beat those people who arrived earlier than you at the games,” Bakkabulindi told the team of 72 set to travel in two batches.
The first batch left yesterday afternoon and the other left this morning.

“You are going to represent the country and on top of seeing that the crested crane flies high, you also have to market your talent by winning medals,” Bakkabulindi stressed.

The minister handed over the flag to overall team captain Isaac Omedo, who promised that the team will fight for medals and excellence at the games. Uganda is to be represented by six disciplines minus soccer and swimming.
