The European Union delegation is to buy uniforms and shoes for 172 pupils of Maaru primary school in Rengen sub-county, Kotido district.

Out-going head of delegation ambassador Sigurd Illing said this on Wednesday during his farewell visit to Karamoja. He commissioned a classroom block whose construction the EU funded.

The block was one of the 100 micro-projects funded by the EU in the region since 2004. The Karamoja project implementation unit (KIU) coordinated the construction.

The new block replaced one that collapsed in 2004, killing three pupils and injuring a teacher, Aldo Gulu, who said the school was forced to close after the incident.

“It was only after the European Union constructed this bock that parents sent their children back,” Gulu said.

He said all the 172 pupils, some of whom walked around almost naked, were in primary one.

The area was about 10km away from the nearest primary school in the district.

Illing said they planned to start another project for the rehabilitation of northern Uganda with a component for Karamoja development.

State minister for northern Uganda reconstruction and Karamoja development David Wakikona said they would construct a borehole at the school.
