SIR — I wish to raise an issue that many scholars have raised in respect to children’s education. The
education system in Uganda and the workload imposed on pupils and students is not only stressful to children but to their parents as well. Believe me, one can’t sleep if their child is still in the sitting room trying to finish up homework.

My humble appeal to the ministry of education is to take the public’s outcry about academic workload very seriously. If it means reviewing the syllabus and school programmes, let it be done.

In fact, the way children are made to toil may point to a faulty syllabus design. Why can’t the stipulated work be covered in the normal allocated time? Longer school days for our children is very dangerous.
