New strategy over poverty

SIR — Fighting poverty from big offices by policy makers will not be effective. It will also not succeed if it is emphasised among the impoverished, deep in the villages.

I suggest that in every home and school, parents and teachers should bring up children, right from nursery, with the awareness of scarcity and the need to be creative, economical, flexible, open-minded, optimistic and not materialistic.

Yes, even the children from rich families should be taught these values. Life is very unpredictable. Uganda’s economy is fast deteriorating and the cost of living gets higher by the day.

“One can be poor only if they choose to be” — that is the attitude children should grow up with.
