FORMER national tennis star Eric Ofuyuru is dead. Ofuyuru who was a key figure in Ugandan tennis in the 1990s died on Wednesday after a long illness, at the age of 29.
Then a little boy, Ofuyuru started playing tennis at Lugogo in the 1980s.
He was one of the best junior players of his generation who represented Uganda in International Tennis Federation (ITF) U-14, U-16 and U-18 junior tournaments.
He was on Uganda’s pioneer team in the Euro-Africa Davis Cup that was hosted in Kampala in 1997. He then had a training stint in Germany before retiring to concentrate on coaching.
“He was very good both as a player and coach. He had dedicated his life to fulltime coaching. Lugogo Tennis Club and the entire tennis fraternity will certainly miss Eric,†national coach John Oduke commented.
There will be a funeral service today at 10am at Christ the King Church before the body is transported to Nebbi for burial tomorrow.
