Prevention is cheaper!

SIR — The saying that prevention is better than cure will never be challenged because prevention is much cheaper than cure.

SIR — The saying that prevention is better than cure will never be challenged because prevention is much cheaper than cure. Uganda seems to be a filthy country as evidenced by the rubbish heaps whose photos are published daily.
We all know that garbage is superb breeding ground for all sorts of diseases and vectors. Epidemics like cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea are common in Uganda. Let us not forget that even mosquitoes breed extremely well in garbage.
remove the garbage from your environment and you will prevent hundreds of diseases. In the process you will get fresh air to breathe, avoid premature death, and save lots of money that you would otherwise spend on treatment.
The government of Uganda boasted sometime back of having purchased an apparatus to diagnose bird flu.
The disease was first identified in Italy more than 100 years ago. To date only about 100 people have died of it! It is spread by birds which, of course, can easily get into close contact with people when foraging on rubbish heaps. Is it such a difficult task for the government and local administrators to set up a programme for cleaning up and disposal of waste?
