FRANK Mugisa survived a nearly putting collapse on Sunday to win the Mbarara golf Open and his first major title. The Fort Portal star carded 149 gross on the par-70 dry and fast course.

Mugisa earned a cooker while other top performers got microwave ovens from tournament sponsors Nile bank.

“I am delighted to win, it was such a tough event,” the 22-year-old said.

But Mugisa nearly ruined his game on the back nine on Sunday following a series of putting blunders.

“I had to putt two or three times, I cannot explain what exactly happened,” Mugisa explained.

Mugisa, who birdied the first hole, dropped eight strokes for 78 after taking the lead at 71 on Saturday.

The champion, who took up golf in 2002, finally realised his dream after several near misses.

Mugisa was one stroke better than Herman Mutawe, hero of the Mehta Open held in July.

But the event ended badly for Kabale player Kenneth Namanya and Jinja’s Emmanuel Opio both disqualified for signing for lower scores. Namanya carded 150 while Opio fired 153.

Attention now turns to the Uganda Open due September 14-17 at the Kitante course.
