WORLD 3000m steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru will take on Olympic 5000m champion Meseret Defar of Ethiopia in Newcastle today.

The duo are part of the field that will take part in the Newcastle Gateshead Great North 3km road race, a pre-event to tomorrow’s Bupa Great North run.

Inzikuru, 24, who will be defending the title she won in the inaugural event last year, will be joined by other stars including 3000m steeplechase rival Wioletta Janowska and Liliya Shobukhova in the event.

Inzikuru enters today’s race as second favourite to Defar, who has achieved a world 5000m record of 14:24.53 on the track and a world 5km best of 14:46 on the road.

The race will be a good boost for Inzikuru who is also eyeing the inaugural World Road Running Championship due next Sunday in Debrecen, Hungary, as she fights to regain her form since suffering an allergy in April while training in Kenya.
