GLOBAL warming could turn diseases like malaria into epidemics in developing countries, a French minister has said.
Nelly Olin, the environment minister, warned that this could happen within a matter of years.
She said changes in temperature could lead to drought, more disease and rising sea levels, which are likely to hit developing countries harder.
She was launching an awareness campaign in Paris under the banner of “Green garden” in which the media would communicate messages on the impact of global warming.
“There will be disappearance of some species,” she said, adding that vectors like the mosquitoes that cause malaria were getting more favourable habitats.
She said other than malaria, cholera, dysentery and diarrhoea were likely to become common as the low-lying areas were likely to get flooded after the melting of ice at the Arctic and Antarctica.
Olin interacted with 10 environmental journalists from Africa and urged them to take up coverage of issues on global warming and loss of biological diversity.
