UGANDA’S high population growth rate is a good thing, state minister for planning Omwony Ojok has said.

“It is the position of government that our population growth is a good thing. The increased population means a potential for a bigger market and the capacity to defend our nation,” Ojok said.

The recently launched State of the World and State of Uganda populations report put the population growth rate at 3.6% per annum.

Ojok said this at a dairy business workshop for processors, farmers and input suppliers at Lake View Resort Hotel in Mbarara town on Friday.

He said Africa’s population at about 500 million is below China’s population.
“We are Ugandans and must determine our policy for our benefit and not for the benefit of others,” Ojok said.

Ojok, however, said there was need to increase the current 5% GDP growth rate to transform the economic infrastructure through industrialisation.

Ojok said the government will focus on promoting commercial production, address security, encourage micro-finance and boost farmers’ groups in rural areas.
