THE Government has asked the manufacturers of a drug used to treat fevers including malaria to stop production pending the usage of the current stock. Addressing journalists at the Media Centre on Thursday, the state minister for health, Dr. Richard Nduhura, said the Government also intends to phase out the use of Homapak drugs after detecting resistance to the combination by the malaria parasite. The local manufacturers of the drug are Kampala Pharmaceutical Industries, Uganda Pharmaceutical Industries and Rene Industries.
Nduhura said the Malaria Control Programme manager, Dr. John Rwakimari, had written to the district directors of health to collect and distribute the remaining stock of Homapak from the National Medical Stores.
Rwakimaari said 8 million doses of Homapak are in the store of which the first bunch will expire in April 2007.
