SIR — Your article “HIV/AIDS prevalence rates high in Rakai” published on Thursday is very disappointing.

Rakai district was the first to record HIV/AIDS in Uganda, the first district to fully implement decentralised health service delivery in the country and has benefited more from HIV/AIDS NGOs than other districts in the country.

Above all, it has the most researched upon population on HIV/AIDS in the world, thanks to the Rakai project.

One would expect, basing on those factors that the population is likewise very well informed about preventive measures.

So it is alarming that we still have such high level prevalence in Rakai, even when levels nationally seem to have been contained.

The district health team in Rakai must look for answers to this scenario because it does not augur well about prevention efforts in the district.
