SOROTI is the leading district in crime since the second half of last year, a Police report has said.

According to the report from the mid-eastern region released to the press on Friday at Soroti Police Station, regional CID officer Hillary Odoch said out of the five serious crimes, Soroti registered the highest numbers, followed by Kaberamaido, Katakwi and Kumi.

He said theft of all kinds was the leading crime, followed by defilement, murder, robbery and rape.

“Since mid last year 724 cases of theft, 608 for defilement, 178 of murder, 64 of robbery and 16 of rape were registered,” he said.
Odoch said there was marked increase from 2003 when there were 32 murder cases, 72 of robbery, 12 rape and 677 theft cases reported.

He said defilement was still high in all the four districts, adding that older people went to the young thinking they were safe from HIV/AIDS.

“The LRA insurgency has led to poverty, which forced parents to marry off their underage daughters and when men fail to pay the bride price, the turn to the police, accusing the men of defilement,” Odoch said.
