A ROW has erupted between Kasese district council and the residents of Kahokya parish in Lake Katwe sub-county over a wetland.
The district wants to conserve the only water source in the parish which serves at least 10,000 residents in the dry hilly area along the Equator north of Kikorongo junction on the Kasese-Mbarara highway.
Residents said that was the only viable land for agriculture.
Kahokya stream flows through a stretch of land on which residents grow food crops.
“Due to excessive pressure on the wetland by cultivators, its water volume is decreasing at a very high rate and soon, we may see it dry up,” the district wetland management officer, Augustine Koli, said recently.
Kahokya village chairman Muhamud Ajumani said the Government wanted to grab the only piece of land the entire parish depends on.
