THE Belgium government has extended a grant of six million euros (sh13b) to Kampala City Council (KCC).

Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito said KCC would contribute 10% of the grant.
“Comparing with the problems we have collecting taxes, 10% looks a lot but we are making efforts to ensure that we fulfil the requirement,” Ssebaana said on Monday after a meeting with Belgium officials in Kampala.

He said the money would be used on the drainage system and setting up street lights in Kisenyi.

Ssebaana said the works would begin at the end of March after compensating the affected residents.

Meanwhile, the World Bank has given KCC $600,000 (over sh1b) to prepare a new project to improve the city infrastructure and fight floods.

KCC is in talks with the bank to fund the Kampala Institution and Infrastructure Development project at $98m. The project coordinator, David Kiggundu, said on Wednesday KCC would hire experts to do a feasibility study.
