PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has described Bugweri county MP Abdu Katuntu as a ‘poisonous mushroom’ who was out to suffocate government programmes.

“How could you send entyabire (Kinyankole word for poisonous mushroom) to Parliament to represent you? You used your votes wrongly because your MP is anti-development,” Museveni said amid cheers from the huge crowd.

The President was on Monday addressing a rally at Busesa in Bugweri county, Iganga district. Bugweri is a stronghold of Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) historical members.

Katuntu, a promoter of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), did not attend the rally.

Museveni said entyabire had no value apart from its poison. “It is the reason why nobody eats it,” he added.

Museveni equated Katuntu to the UPC founder leaders, whom he accused of mismanaging the politics of Uganda.

Museveni said because of the gross mismanagement, UPC had become politically bankrupt.”

“In 1966, UPC introduced dictatorship and started using the gun. You remember how Idd Amin entered the Lubiri in Mengo. This marked the introduction of the gun into the politics of this country,” he said.

Museveni said he was forced to use the gun to silence the politics of the gun. “We now have peace and the power that had been taken away through UPC dictatorship, has been brought back to the people.”

“UPC could not afford to sustain the dictatorship and in 1971, they collapsed like a mushroom.”

Deputy National Political Commissar Kirunda Kivejinja assured Museveni of movement support in Bugweri.
“People in Bugweri do not believe in the same way as their MP,” he said.

Museveni, who has been on a five-day working tour of Busoga region, excited thousands of supporters who lined along the road from Busesa to Muterere, a distance of about 65km.
