ARMY officers should observe the rights of children, disabled persons and women in war, Lt. Col. Lucky Kidega has said.

ARMY officers should observe the rights of children, disabled persons and women in war, Lt. Col. Lucky Kidega has said.

He was on Thursday speaking at a three-day workshop organised by the Child Protection Unit (CPU) at Acholi Inn.
The workshop was attended by UPDF officers and former LRA rebels.
Kidega said respecting the rights of vulnerable groups was key among the army’s roles.
He urged the officers, especially those in direct combat operations, to adhere to the UPDF code of conduct.
“You are confronted with saving the lives of these children still in the hands of the LRA, who are even more vulnerable then the ones in the cold on the streets or in the internally displaced people’s camps,” Kidega said.
He said the officers had to be aware of the land awareness law, respect people’s cultures and religious differences in the communities where they operate.
Gulu LC5 vice-chairman Paul Kerubino urged the soldiers to observe the goals of the training, so they could become better commanders.
