THE law council, the regulatory authority of lawyers in Uganda, has suspended the use of generic names to label law firms.
Jude Etyang reports that the council has requested the registrar of companies not to register any law business under a generic name which is outside names of lawyers running the chambers.
The Uganda Law Society president, Moses Adriko, defined a generic name as a name outside the surname of an advocate, which is the legally authorised name for branding law chambers.
a generic name for instance could take the form of “Superior Advocates.”
The council passed the resolution at its meeting on February 23.
A source said lawyers were worried that quack law businesses were emerging in down town Kampala using generic names.
He cited Kampala Associated Legal Advisors opened by “some diploma holders from LDC.”
