EXPRESSION of emotions like crying allows us to release tension which would otherwise build up and cause chronic depression, a form of mental illness.

According to psychiatrists, grieving and mourning allows us to get sympathy and support from society.

Dr. Ssegane Musisi of Mulago Hospital says when emotions are not expressed, we experience loss of energy, difficulty in work, loss of sleep and appetite. Other effects are breakdown in relationships and reduced sex drive.

“Suppressed emotions are associated with suicidal tendencies,” Musisi said adding that in the societies where expression of emotions is frowned upon, cases of depression, alcoholism and suicide are high. People should feel free to express emotions without limitations. It is healthy even in the short run.
