MOVIT Products Ltd has bought the a half acre of land which houses the Wobulenzi town market in Luweero district.

The land previously belonged to Lighton Nankya.

Movit, the beauty products manufacturers, plan to construct an ultra-modern market on the land at a cost of sh800m.

If completed, the market would be the biggest in the district.

The market will benefit thousands of traders currently operating in the makeshift shops and stalls. The market was previously run by Wobulenzi town council and some of the sitting tenants.

Simpson Birungi, Movit managing director, said on Saturday, the new market would shelter over 1,000 shops and stalls.

He said they had already compensated 80% of the squatters.

“We should be starting on the project by the middle of this month.

“We have already compensated three quarters of the existing squatters in and around the market,” Birungi said.

Charles Lutaaya, the Wabulenzi town clerk, said the project would improve the working conditions of the traders and generate revenue for the council.

“Our purpose is to collect market revenue. We have no problem with the new land owners. We support their decision for a modern market in the area. This should spur our development,” Lutaaya said yesterday.
