BUSOGA Kingdom has condemned the violent eviction of people from the South Busoga forest reserve in Bunha, Mayuge district.
A statement dated April 28, signed by the kingdom director of information, Moses Lwochaza, said the prime minister, Martin Musumba, who recently led a team of ministers on a fact-finding tour in the area, expressed concern over the alleged torture of residents.
During the tour, people said their houses were burnt, women raped, while property was looted and crops destroyed during the eviction by officials from the National Forestry Authority (NFA).
They said the exercise was unlawful.
Musumba urged residents to stay calm, saying they would petition the president over the matter.
The NFA officials recently evicted hundreds of people from the reserve covering Malongo and Kityerera sub-counties and areas around Lake Victoria in Mayuge.
Musumba was accompanied by his deputy Stephen Bewayo and ministers A. Buyinza, J. Kadoko and Frida Muwumba.
