Nakaseke county has been approved as a district.
President Yoweri Museveni told the Movement National Executive Committee at Speke Resort Hotel, Munyonyo on Friday that he had approved the request by Nakaseke residents for a new district.
“Abe Nakaseke temukola kivve (Nakaseke residents don’t do something abominable),” he said, referring to the residents’ recent act of exhuming skulls of war victims to agitate for a district status.
“I have no problem with Nakaseke becoming a district. I had talked about it with Syda (Bbumba, the energy minister) but somehow it did not come up through the local government,” Museveni said.
The bush war that brought Museveni to power was centred in Luweero triangle, of which Nakaseke is part.
Other proposed districts are Koboko, Tororo county and Mityana.
He said when the NRM decentralised powers, districts became popular because power and services were brought nearer to the people.
The Ministry of Local government has this financial year been allocated over sh42b, some of which will be spent on the creation of the new districts.
