UGANDAN cricket finds itself on the brink of immortality as the Mini-World Cup kicks off in Dublin and Belfast.
July 1 will retain a special place in our hearts if the team makes it to the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies and given the confidence Joel Olweny and company possessed as they departed, there is no reason to believe it won’t happen.
July 1 will forever be the date that the first step to fulfiling ‘The Dream’ will be made though UCA and other concerned parties will tell you that the groundwork was laid many years ago.
The current team has a better chance of success than its predecessor of 2001 in Toronto as it is more seasoned and has the rare benefit of continuity.
Nine of the present contingent made it to Canada in 2001 and while two travel as officials, the other seven are expected to form the spine of our campaign.
Continuity has been a deficient aspect in other Ugandan sports, notably football, where even the most informed fan finds it taxing to predict the probable Cranes XI before the next match.
UCA should be commended for somehow retaining the bulk of the Toronto team despite the lure of more lucrative options outside the cricketing world.
And if UCA and its team reaps the success it so richly deserves in Ireland, it will be because the cricket body sowed, something others have failed to do.
