KAMPALA City councillor Godfrey Nyakaana on Saturday blocked the eviction of 10 vendors operating at Kapasi building on Wilson Road.
The vendors, who included shoe shines, newspaper vendors, telephone booth operators and soda sellers, were being evicted by Interland General Auctioneers.
The auctioneers were instructed to evict the vendors by Property Services, the owners of the premises.
Nyakaana said, “I told them to go back and work. These are people just struggling to survive. They don’t even block the shops, why chase them away. Even in the United States of America, you get such people.”
The Central Division councillor said the bailiffs were using harsh means to evict the vendors.
“I asked them (bailiffs) to come with documentary evidence from Kampala City Council before the eviction can be instituted,” said Nyakaana, a former US-based professional boxer.
