AGRICULTURE minister Janat Mukwaya yesterday opened the first general assembly for the Regional Universities forum on Agriculture, calling on them to make their research relevant to farmers.

Malawi education minister, Zimbabwe’s deputy education minister and heads of universities from Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe are attending the three-day Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) conference in Kampala.

“I believe that this meeting will be only the start of concrete actions to improve relevance of universities to society and that the research projects will result into new knowledge that might lead to the solutions of our problems, particularly poverty,” Mukwaya said.

RUFORUM was formed in 2004 to strengthen and promote the role of universities in East and Southern Africa in agricultural innovations.
It is funded by the Rockefeller foundation.
