FORMER local government minister Bidandi Ssali has criticised president Yoweri Museveni for using the ‘Let them go’ slogan in the referendum campaign, reports Willie Wambedde.

Addressing journalists at UTODA house in Old Kampala on Tuesday, Bidandi said, “Nobody asked me to join the national Resistance movement (NRM) and nobody can tell me to go, not even the President.”

Bidandi, 68, said “I may look tired but I am not. I am still vibrant.”

He said he voted for the opening up of political space despite his initial disagreement with the referendum as a process of transition.

“I disagreed with the referendum since the Kyankwanzi delegates meeting in Luweero district because of the costs involved.

“I suggested alternative procedures through parliament and district councils,” Bidandi said.

He said under the multiparty system, a new Electoral commission should be set up to suit the interests of all parties and avoid suspicion.

Bidandi said giving out party cards to children aged 16 years would cause political rivalry in the young generation.

“Supplying party cards to children was not among the intentions of the party. I can’t be a party to that. It is shallow,” he said.

Bidandi said denying people of Kampala to vote their mayor was not democratically right since other districts were allowed to vote for theirs.
