THE Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) has embarked on the construction of a $220,000 (about sh390m) office block that will transform UWEC’s image and sustainability.
“The building will give an improved image to UWEC as a reputable organisation in the conservation education arena. Many of our visitors have been wondering whether they’re not coming to another ‘caged’ zoo,” UWEC executive director Dr. Andrew Sseguya said.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony at the UWEC headquarters in Entebbe on Wednesday, Sseguya said the facility would improve the quality of UWEC’s services and its financial and environmental sustainability.
Tourism state minister Jovino Akaki hailed UWEC for having become an important introduction and information point for Uganda’s wildlife.
Akaki, who was chief guest, said the government was committed to developing UWEC into a ‘financially sustainable and modern national conservation and education institution’.
“The government recognises the pivotal role UWEC plays in both tourism development and conservation education as a means to sustainable and effective management of wildlife and cultural resources of Uganda,” he said.
The ultra-modern building, expected to be ready by October, will comprise a modern ticketing facility with full automated turnstiles to limit inconveniences to clients, a modern gift/curio shop, restaurant/snacks bar and a resource centre/internet café.
It will offer upgraded security, including CCTV (Close Circuit TV) cameras.
The building is funded by the World Bank.
UWEC board of trustees chairperson Paul Mafabi said UWEC would set up a $4m (about sh7b) trust fund to reduce donor dependency.
