Speaking after swearing in a seven-member interim district council on Wednesday, Arua chief magistrate Gabriel Nyipir said the oaths of allegiance and secrecy that they recited were linked to the Constitution.
“This is a very short but significant process. Remember false declaration is liable to prosecution,†Nyipir said.
He encouraged them to broaden their knowledge of the law, especially the Local Government Act, saying ignorance of the law was no defence.
Nyipir stressed the importance of collective responsibility on decisions by council members.
The interim chairman, Idoru Dramuke, appointed George Ambe as his vice-chairman.
