SIR — Barely a week passes without a story about a heart patient, especially children. Normally, the patient is appealing to wellwishers for some money to cover expenses for a heart operation in Madras, India. Most such patients are said to have a hole in the heart, which implies abnormal development of the heart, probably having begun in the very early days of foetal growth. Why are such heart disorders on the increase in this country these days? Has the government tried to find out the cause or has nobody noticed the seriousness of the problem yet?
