I discussed only birth defects

SIR — In my letter published in The New Vision on September 1 entitled’ “Heart diseases not increasing”, I clearly discussed only birth defects of the heart and not cardiovascular diseases in general.

It was a direct answer to The New Vision readers who wanted to know if and why the number of patients with holes (medically birth defects) in the heart had increased.

Once again I emphasise that there is no medical evidence showing that the occurrence of birth defects of the heart has risen.

The misunderstanding could have risen from the headline (not my original one) The New Vision gave to my letter which suggested that heart diseases had not increased.

However, Dr. James Sekajugo and Dr. Ambrose Talisuna of the Ministry of Health are right when they say that acquired cardiovascular diseases are increasing for the reasons they stated. They are also right about their suggestions to prevent them and people should follow their advice.
