What would you do to a cheating spouse?

Sep 09, 2005

CHEATING is a common trait among couples worldwide. We collected some ideas in a mini survey among people in Kampala.

Janet Kays, 31, trader
I would fly off and threaten to leave. But deep down, I would know I’m lying to myself. A man will always cheat, whatever you do to please him. It is out of fashion for a woman to file for divorce because she has found her man cheating. Because women outnumber men, I fear that I may leave my husband and spend several months alone. Leaving the man would mean losing many of the things you worked for.

Lumu Fred, 41, radio mechanic
I would pack all her belongings and take them to the nearest taxi stop. She can pick them from there and go. If she returns to my home, I would leave.

Harriet Onyalla, 25, Journalist
I’d slap him.

Aggrey Kirunda Mene, 54, cloths dealer
I recently abandoned my third wife because she was fooling around with someone. I first heard rumours before I caught them red-handed. I come from the Busoga royals clan and we are taught that the world is full of women all of whom belong to us.

Edirisa Sempuma, 22, Boda Boda rider.
I would send her away and wouldn’t allow her back even if she swore that she wouldn’t do it again. I cannot take chances in this age where AIDS is felling us down by the hundreds.

Beth Namazzi, 36, Salon Attendant
It depends. If he is a mean person, who does not give me money, I would leave him. But I would not leave a generous man, who gives me loads of money, even if I caught him cheating 100 times.

Brenda Zobbo, late 20s, Radio One Presenter
I would just walk out on him, without saying another thing. But I may be tempted to slap, kick or punch him. I would want to beat him really hard before forgiving him.

Irene Namugambe, 25, public pay phone attendant
I would go home, prepare a nice supper and share it with him as if nothing had happened. At bedtime, I would ask him why he did it. I would remind him about our marriage vows and tell him that I will do anything to make sure that he does not cheat again. Many times men cheat because we don’t satisfy them. Sometimes we lead them to more lustful friends who seduce them.
