CITY advocate Erias Lukwago has appealed to lawyers to give the profession a human face, writes Vision Reporter.
Speaking at a round-table conference of law students of Lumumba and Mary Stuart halls of Makerere University recently, Lukwago regretted that “many lawyers are involved in cutting dubious deals and it is really killing our profession.’’
He said even when a lawyer made a genuine mistake, the first public perception is that he was ‘bought’.
Lukwago said he was happy that the law course at Makerere University had been totally liberalised to focus on fundamental rights and other social aspects, unlike in the past where law and morality were moving in different directions.
Lukwago emphasised the need to take the clients’ cases as lawyers’ cases. He said in the legal fraternity, if a lawyer loses a case, he does not lose sleep, since the client has already paid for the service.
The Law Students’ Society chairman, Timothy Kakembo, emphasised the importance of such fora and introduced the society’s programme to the freshers.
