Sep 24, 2005

Dish: beef in Guinness
Cuisine: Irish cuisine specialty
Place: BJ’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Industrial Area
Price at time of review: One will be set back by a paltry sh10,000

Ingredients:
Oyster sauce, thyme, mixed herbs, sage, bay leaves, onions, garlic, parsley, carrots, butter, fillet steak, salt, Irish potatoes and half a bottle of Guinness.

Information on the dish:
Before you start narrowing your eyes at the thought of eating a meal prepared with some alcohol that might get you intoxicated, the amounts inserted in the beef are minimal.
A bottle of Guinness is 300ml – meaning only 150ml is actually applied in the beef and only as a flavour enhancer so it can’t get you drunk.
However, with the onions fried till golden, the fillet steak light fried and the Irish potatoes boiled to perfection, it is interesting to note that the Guinness is put in the already ready meal last and left to settle for a couple of minutes before serving.
At BJ’s, it is served on a large plate with a large wedge of lettuce and some grated carrots making it visually and tastefully pleasant to eat and savour over.

Why I recommend it:
Being a typically indigenous Irish meal, their particular knack for blending alcohol and food makes it an even more interesting dish to discover its winning formula and taste.
As you munch away on the sizeable portions of the fillet steak and slice through the soft Irish potatoes, you never really taste the Guinness, but notice its addition in form of flavour. The abundance in vegetables and herbs added to the dish render it bountifully nutritious. And because the beef used is fillet and doe not have any fat, the weight conscience diners will also relate to it.
