THE Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, on Sunday commissioned a Police health club set up with the aid of Asiatic Sports, dealers in sports equipment.

Asiatic Sports in February last year donated gym equipment worth sh40m to the Police, to be installed at the Police Anti-terrorism Unit (PATU) headquarters at Ntinda Police Barracks.

But the installation dragged due to logistical difficulties.

Flanked by Charanjit Singh and Karan Singh, the managing director and director of Asiatic Sports and a host of other top Police officers, Katumba tried out the equipment during a guided tour.

“Very soon we will have very fit Police officers,” Katumba said as he sampled a multipurpose machine in a light workout.

Charanjit said Asiatic Sports would continue donating equipment to the gym and supporting sports in the force.

“This is only a beginning and we promise continued support to the gym and the Police,” Charanjit said.

Charanjit expressed willingness to transform a vast open space in the barracks into a sports complex.

Currently, Police staff children are using the space as a playground.

Senior Police officers present included the director of Special Branch, Juventine Odoket, transport officer Marciel Tibaleka and Police sports chief Abu Kalule.
