WORKERS MP Martin Wandera yesterday opposed an amendment to have political parties funded by the State.

He also proposed that public officers as well as members of the Police and Prison forces should be allowed to belong to political parties.

He was presenting his views on the Political Parties and Organisations Bill, 2005 to the committee on legal and parliamentary affairs at Parliament.

Wandera said political parties are voluntary private organisations that should not be funded by the taxpayer. “Funding parties is a symptom of a weak democracy,” he said.
