SIR — I have always wondered what criteria, if any, the USA government uses to choose which countries to get involved in whenever human rights are violated.

SIR — I have always wondered what criteria, if any, the USA government uses to choose which countries to get involved in whenever human rights are violated. Are there any human rights violations in the USA? If so, who should point them out? If you code speeches by President Bush, Rice and Rumsfeld, you will find that they centre their arguments around democracy, justice, equity and a few others.
Is the US really democratic? Is it a just society? Are people really equal in the USA?
I am sure some people will agree that some answers are negative, although I also think that these prominent politicians may somehow believe in what they say or at least tell themselves to believe in what they say. In many cases, the US uses the ‘human rights’ excuse to support its foreign policy and interests more than anything else.
