IN a bid to tackle waste as an environmental and health hazard, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) will compost garbage into manure.

NEMA’s executive director, Anyamanya Mugisha says Soroti, Jinja, Mbarara, Mbale, Lira, Mukono, Mpigi and Kabale will benefit from the 10-year Clean Management Mechanism (CDM) project.

In a circular sent to the beneficiary towns, Anyamanya said composting of waste would reduce on the amount of waste in urban centres.

He called upon the towns to improve on waste collection saying that NEMA would buy the equipment for composting waste.

“We have set aside money to compost some of the waste into. The collection of waste needs to be improved and to ensure clean and healthy environment,” the circular reads.

This, he said, would produce manure, which is important in improvement of soil productivity, increase of food yields and household incomes thereby improving human health.

Soroti senior environment officer, Herbert Oule said they would receive $300,000 (sh552,000,000).

The project funded by The World Bank is aimed at emission reduction .
