The best time for jogging is during the bright hours of the day in order to obtain maximum benefit from exercises. Jogging at night when the body is meant to rest is un-natural and running in the dark is dangerous because you can incur injuries or get accidents.

The length of daylight in Uganda is between 12 to 12 ½ hours throughout the year, but for jogging there is a difference in different hours of the day.

The ideal time for jogging is either early in the morning (6:30am – 9:00am) when the air is cool and you are fresh from night rest, or late in the evening (after 5:00pm) when the body is still awake, lunch digestion is complete, temperature is slowly cooling down and the mind needs to relax from the stress of the day.

Weather conditions are very important for a jogger. It is better to avoid jogging when the sun is at its peak and when it is raining heavy.

Exercising during hot conditions will make you sweat heavily and you risk suffering heat shock. In case of rain, we can postpone our exercise for a few hours until the conditions are favourable, since in Uganda it is very rare to have rain the whole day. It is not recommended to jog soon after a meal for the obvious reason that it is uncomfortable to jog when digestion is taking place.

The minimum time between a meal and jogging depends on the type and quantity of food consumed. It is advisable to jog when digestion is complete. On average, for solid food, this duration is between three – four hours. The writer is the trainer of Uganda’s long distance runners Inzikuru, Malinga, Toroitich and Busnei
