Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, the water, lands and environment minister, has won the NRM elections in Bushenyi, making him the district party chairman.

Otafiire defeated the incumbent district party chief, Yowasi Makaru, with 316 against 146 votes.

The elections that were briefly disrupted by a downpour, were held at Katungu Mothers’ Union hall in Bushenyi.

Last week, the rivals petitioned President Yoweri Museveni after failing on agree on who should step down for the other but Museveni advised them to stay in the race.

After the elections, Otafiire told Makaru that he would be the NRM vice-chairman, saying the post had been agreed on between the parties at the meeting with Museveni.

He said his victory was vital for the party because Makaru would not have been able to handle Forum for Democratic Change campaigners like Richard Kaijuka, Miria Matembe and Amanya Mushega.
