Mbale deputy town clerk Kenneth Khatuuli Waniaye has abolished the mileage and medical allowance for civil servants in the municipality.

He said the unauthorised monthly privileges in which employees who did not have personal vehicles also earned mileage allowances was not provided for in the government standing orders.

“The council has been losing close to sh20m per month in these allowa-nces. This money could have been used to settle outstanding debts that have stifled developments,” Khatuuli said.

He said some employees who sold their vehicles continued to earn mileage allowances. Khatuuli said mileage allowances would only be paid for specific activities approved by his office.
