THE Uganda delegation to Malta returned safely after the country was officially declared the host of the 2007 biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

President Yoweri Museveni
addressed an impromptu press conference to stave off the criticism and bad coverage directed towards Uganda after the arrest and detention of FDC leader Col. Dr Kizza Besigye.

After delivering a paper, “Can Africa trade herself out of poverty?” in which he charmed the audience with several anecdotes, an official of the Commonwealth Trade Union shot up, resurrected the saga of the AGOA girls strike and their right to visit the toilet more than twice during working hours at Tri-Star Apparels. Museveni called it a sensational story he has never heard of.

Another official reported that there was a Ugandan journalist at the meeting who was scared for his security. “Can you guarantee the safety of journalist Frank Nyakairu when he returns to Uganda?” he asked and assured the president that they will be following the case.

The room fell silent; everyone was shocked. It was not clear why the official had raised the matter. Nonetheless, Museveni replied: “Oh! I love journalists very much. But sometimes they tell lies. If it is lies, we challenge them.”

When Museveni was leaving the conference room at Corinthia San Gong Hotel in St. Julianna, he asked loudly: “where is the endangered journalist?”

He had a chat with Nyakairu and asked him whether he was the son of the late pilot Col. Peter Nyakairu, to which he answered in the affirmative.

“This is my son. Nooha orikuku teganisa?” Museveni asked to know who was intimidating him. Nyakairu said there was no bad blood only that journalists were being locked out of the meeting but let in after the intervention of press secretary Onapito Ekomoloit.

Poor boy! he later lost his phone with all his contacts. Poor boy!
