THE LC5 chairman Kayunga, Steven Dagada and Kapchorwa Woman MP Gertrude Kulany, who lost in the just-concluded NRM district chairperson elections, insist they will stand as independents against the officially elected candidates.

Kulany, who lost to Rukia Chekamando during the women MP primary elections, said yesterday her people were calling her to stand individually.

This, however, is contrary to the NRM constitution and losers who insist on standing as independents risk dismissal, according to the chairperson of the party electoral commission, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.

Dagada, who lost to Muwanga Mulondo, said, “I’m going to stand as an independent. That (warning) is Rugunda’s story. I will give them their card but I will retain the (party) spirit within me. I believe in fair elections.”

He said he had never sworn an oath of allegiance to the constitution, which Rugunda quoted. “People want me to stand,” he said.

He said he did not petition the commission because when he saw malpractices taking place, he rang an official of the commission three times but nothing was done.
Kulany said, “We are not deviating but they should understand our internal wrangles.”
