Uganda 2 Ecuador 1

CRANES notched arguably their biggest triumph since beating Cameroon in 1987, by humbling World Cup-bound Ecuador 2-1 to clinch third-place in the LG Cup in Cairo yesterday.
Police FC’s league-title winning duo of Martin Muwanga and Geoffrey Massa struck in the second half to erase Ecuador’s first half lead. Cranes won themselves a hefty sh37m.
The result was also significant because Uganda has never played a South American side since their tour to the continent in the early sixties.
Steven Nsereko and Morley Byekwaso organised Cranes midfield in a game both of them had an assist in the goals. Massa connected home Byekwaso’s corner with a sublime header before Muwanga finished off Nsereko’s free-kick.
It was a great recovery from an opening match 2-0 defeat by Egypt.
Against Ecuador, Uganda’s all-round competence of passing consistently did the trick.
Cranes return on Saturday from the fully sponsored trip. The victory is a consolation for coach Mohammad Abbas’ team that promised so much but failed to return with the Senior Challenge Cup in Rwanda recently.
Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay will represent South America at the World Cup in Germany next year. Uganda has never been to the World Cup but famously beat Algeria, who had humbled Germany, in 1983.
