Bombers to train in Cuba

By James Bakama

THERE is a possibility of Ugandan boxers getting a training stint in Cuba should they qualify for the Athens Olympics.
“Cuba is a boxing superpower from which our fighters can benefit a lot. I am seriously considering this idea,” sports promoter Michael Ezra recently revealed.
Uganda will, starting Thursday at a competition in Morocco, make yet another attempt at getting qualifiers for the Athens Olympic Games boxing tournament.
Ezra has committed sh392m (and not sh320m as reported yesterday) to Uganda’s boxing team Olympic campaign.
Cuba has since the 1972 games dominated Olympic boxing with fighters like Teofilo Stevenson being rated alongside legends like Muhammad Ali.
It will not be the first time that Ugandan pugilists get tips from Cuba should the trip materialise.
A cultural exchange between the two countries in 1989 had the Caribbean state sending a boxing coach, Jiminez Lazaros to Uganda.
Several countries have benefited from such programmes while others have preferred to send their fighters to Cuba.
Ezra is in for the latter. “That Cuba is a very affordable country in terms of expense, makes me believe that a training stint in Havana is possible,” said the tycoon.
The Bombers are currently training at a camp in Hima, Kasese solely funded by Ezra.
