A fierce fight broke out between a telephone operator and a customer over a voicemail message, recently.
Twaha, a foreman in Mpererwe on Gayaza Road, ran short of cement and used a public phone to reach his master.
As it turned out, the boss's phone was not available at the time, as it had been switched on to the answering machine.
Although it was clearly indicated that voicemail calls were being charged sh300, Twaha refused to pay, saying he had not bargained to speak with a machine. This was after he was informed that the phone number was unavailable and he could leave a message.
“For me, I can only pay if I speak to my boss. He is the one to bring cement, not that stupid voice on the phone,” he said, holding his sh1,000 note. Efforts to explain the technological details to Twaha seemed a waste of time. He started walking away. He was grabbed and wrestled to the ground. A fight broke out and when the men were separated, and they were both bleeding.
Twaha ironically lost the sh1,000 during the melee, and for triggering the fight.
He was told to pay the telephone operator sh10,000.
