JAFRED Lorone, Uganda’s upcoming long distance runner has been compensated sh6m for injuries he sustained after a car rammed into him while on a road race.
The athlete who was knocked down by a speeding taxi (UAB 560E) while partaking in the 12km road race organised by Athletics Kampala in October 2003, decided to sue the owner.
Lorone was leading the race at the time of the accident, which occurred in Kawempe. Pascal Owour eventually emerged winner after the accident.
The taxi owner rejected financial demands from the athlete as regards his medical bills and advances for out of court settlement.
Lorone then took the owner of the taxi, a police officer in Kampala to court. Court ruled in favour of the athlete with a sh6m payment in damages.
Lorone, who is still nursing injuries at Mulago Hospital missed the weekend’s road relay.
