KAMPALA - A 22-year-old student at Kampala International University (KIU) was on Friday charged with hiring a hitman to murder her lover's wife and baby. Nice Gukire, a second year student of business studies, denied the charge before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate. She was denied bail although she claimed to be two months pregnant and unable to stand prison conditions.

Mob lynches Arrow man
SOROTI - An irate mob yesterday morning lynched an Arrow Group militia for allegedly stealing nine head of cattle from a camp for the displaced. The suspect, identified only as Okello, was attached to Odudui Arrow detachment in Arapai sub-county. He was arrested near Soroti Core Primary Teachers College in Asuret with the cattle.

UEDC sued for sh20m
JINJA - A former employee of Uganda Electricity Distribution Company (UEDC) has sued the company seeking sh20m in damages and compensation for wrongful dismissal. Jimmy Muwonge, a former accounts clerk, also accused his former boss, Patrick Semanda, of fraud and impersonation.

Court stays Brink caveat
KAMPALA - The High Court on Friday dismissed an application to dislodge a caveat placed on the multi-million mansion in Mbuya said to have been bought using Grenada Bank depositors money. Ten Brink Theodorus and his wife, Annie Schmitz, had requested Justice Gideon Tinyinondi to remove the caveat.

Police nets 60 suspects
MBARARA - Police yesterday arrested more than 60 suspects in a swoop that started at 5:00am. The UPDF 2nd Division spokesman, Lt. Naboth Mugisha, said they carried out a joint operation with local defence units and Police to check rising cases of violent robbery. He said among the suspects were six soldiers.

Body puzzle
KAMPALA - The Police have not yet identified the boy presumably killed in acid, whose charred body was recovered in a drum in Kakola, Kigo in Wakiso district recently. Kampala Police chief Benson Nyeko yesterday appealed to the public to help in the investigations.

US donates
MUKONO - The United States has donated sh360m to help the district in its anti HIV/AID campaign. US Senate advisor Mark Marie disclosed this during his visit to the district recently. District health director Kosayi Luyombo commended USA for the assistance.

Hubby fined
JINJA - Grade One Magistrate Vincent Mugabo on Friday sentenced Moses Kisule, 40, to six months in jail or pay a fine of sh200,000. Prosecution proved that the accused, a resident of Kizinga trading centre, fractured an arm of his wife Asha Namuganzi during a domestic brawl on January 2.

WNBF delay
KAMPALA - The repatriation of 30 West Nile Bank Front commanders to West Nile has been postponed. The amnesty commissioner in charge of the sub-region, Gganyana Miiro, who was briefing United Nations Mission in Congo (MONUC) officials in his office on Friday, said the commanders and 50 of their men were still in Kinshasa. He said he was in contact with the MONUC Kampala office.

Former LC5 remanded
PALLISA - Court remanded former deputy mayor Beatrice Pande to Kamuge Prison over 14 counts of forgery and using false documents to obtain over sh2m. Court on Thursday heard that Pande forged the signature of Ashida Kano, a businesswoman, and withdrew money from her account.

Museveni for pass out
LIRA - President Museveni is to pass out the Amuka militia, the youth and children affairs state minister, Felix Okot Ogong, said during his visit to Aler Farm on Friday.

Apac warned on drinking
APAC - Oyam South MP Okullo-Epak has warned Langi against drunkardness. Epak said experience indicated that drunkards could not escape rebel attacks. He was addressing a gathering at Nambieso sub-county headquarters recently.

Deal excites Pader locals
PADER - The Naivasha peace agreement between the Sudanese government and John Garanga's SPLA/M has caused wide excitement in Pader district, with hopes that it would also bring an end to the 18 years of the LRA rebellion. Lira deputy RDC Sylvester Opira said people were celebrating.
