Sebaggala splits UYD

DIVISIONS in the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) have deepened

DIVISIONS in the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) have deepened, reports Henry Mukasa.

ONE group is accusing the other of being opposed to the candidature of former Kampala mayor, Nasser Ntege Ssebaggala. UYD UK (mainstream) chairman, Kibuka Muganga in an email to The New Vision, said the move to split UYD and DP was engineered by Sam Lubega with the support of his London wing of UYD 2006 Agenda.

Muganga attacked leaders of UYD 2006 Agenda, as ‘sectarian and selfish.’ He said the group was opposed to Sebaggala because he and his brother Latif Sebaggala, the Kawempe North MP, defeated Lubega for the seat. He said Lubega while in UK maligns Sebaggala.
“He claims in London that Nasser Sebaggala was an agent of the Movement who was commissioned to disorganise the DP. All known in London to have been against Sebaggala’s candidature for the DP presidency because he belongs to a different religion have joined Lubega’s UYD so that they can fight Sebaggala. Mabikke and company are Lubega’s enemies because they are Sebaggala’s promoters,” Muganga said.

“UYD UK group finds it lamentable that UYD 2006 Agenda intends to break away from the UYD and cause further disintegration of the Democratic Party,” Muganga wrote. “The cause of all this is the problem of selfish ambitions and sectarianism of people promoting the UYD 2006 Agenda,” he added.
He claimed the Agenda is opposed to the candidature of Sebaggala who is not shy about his plans to contest the 2006 presidential polls as a DP candidate. Sebaggala returned to school that he can achieve that feat.

A split between supporters of Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere and those wishing him retirement and would want Sebaggala to replace him, has dogged UYD for years. Dr Lulume Bayiga, Sam Lubega and Muwanga Kivumbi are said to be firmly behind Ssemogerere and together with Derrick Mutema founded the UYD 2006 Agenda.
